CAP/Rockland Cadet Squadron Mission
Rockland Cadet Squadron is strictly a volunteer group that trains cadets from ages 12-21. As cadets progress through CAP’s multi-level cadet training, they will learn the principles of aviation and aerospace flight. They will learn about rocketry and physics through hands-on experiments. Cadets can even get a taste of military life, and learn about military history, customs, drills and inspection. Cadets could end up in one of the top squads in the nation if they advance to the most elite competition for CAP cadets, National Cadet Competition. CAP offers national cadet encampments with activities in emergency services, engineering, technology, physical fitness, team building and flight training. Cadets can even visit foreign countries through the International Air Cadet Exchange. Many CAP cadets go on to careers in the aviation and aerospace industries. Some pursue technical degrees and others go on to one of the nation’s prestigious military academies. Each year, at least 10 percent of the freshman class at the U.S. Air Force Academy is made up of former CAP cadets. We meet every Tuesday night at the Orangeburg Armory from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. 18 May 10 - Update
Greetings Members and Parents of NY-072,
As we come to a close to the academic year, I would like to take the time out to thank one and all for there participation and commitment to Civil Air Patrol. The staff and I are really excited to offer a quality summer program that matches our cadets needs and time schedule. Starting in July we will be reducing our meeting times and we will resume normal operations in September. Please make note of the dates in our newsletter. Please join us in congratulating 1st Lt. Burpo who will be taking on the position as Deputy Commander of NY-072. He brings a wealth of knowledge and information to the position as he was a former cadet. We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to Major Pereira for his years of service to NY-072 as Deputy Commander. Major Pereira will be staying with us on staff and will be concentrating on another position. We look forward to the summer!

The mission was based on a 42 year old hiker who went to the top of Overlook Mountain in Woodstock the previous night to watch the sun go down. He failed to return and the family notified local authorities around 03:00 EDT. Local agencies and the DEC are engaged in other operations and asked CAP to be lead agency and provide personnel. NOC approved the request.
Ground elements were prebriefed to assemble at the Overlook Mountain Trail Head, establish communications procedures among themselves and mission base. A small mission command staff and air crews were prebriefed to report to the mission base at Orange County Airport. Mission base was formerly opened at 08:10 EDT, key positions filled and the General and Safety briefings conducted.
